Heart Disease May Raise Risk of Colon Cancer and Complications

A new study has found that having heart disease may increase your chances of developing colorectal cancer—and may also make outcomes worse after a cancer diagnosis.

Researchers reviewed data from over 5 million people across 23 studies. They discovered that people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) were more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer. They also had higher chances of dying from any cause once they had colon cancer.

One type of heart disease—heart failure—stood out. People with heart failure were not only more likely to get colon cancer, but also more likely to die sooner. This risk was especially high in women, including those with a condition called HFpEF (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction).

After surgery for colon cancer, people with CVD had a much higher risk of developing arrhythmias—abnormal heart rhythms—but other complications weren’t clearly linked.

This research highlights how closely heart health and cancer risk are connected. Both conditions share common causes, including obesity, diabetes, and smoking. Taking care of your heart could also mean lowering your cancer risk.

If you have heart disease, talk to your doctor about your risk for colorectal cancer. You may benefit from earlier or more frequent screening.
