One-Visit Colon Polyp Removal May Miss Some Cancers, Study Finds

A new study from Japan suggests that removing colon polyps during the same visit as a diagnostic colonoscopy may slightly increase the risk of missing early signs of cancer.

Doctors usually find and remove polyps—small growths that can turn into colorectal cancer—during a colonoscopy. There are two main approaches: removing them during the same visit (single-session polypectomy) or coming back later for a second procedure (deferred polypectomy).

This study looked at over 86,000 people aged 40 to 70 who had their first colonoscopy. It followed them for four years to see who developed colorectal cancer after the procedure.

The results showed that people who had their polyps removed during the same session were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer later, compared to those who had a separate appointment for removal.

While the overall risk of post-colonoscopy cancer was still low in both groups, the difference was important. The researchers believe that rushing through diagnosis and treatment in one visit may increase the chance of missing some signs of cancer.

This doesn’t mean single-session polyp removal is unsafe—but it shows that accuracy matters. Taking time to carefully check and remove polyps, even if it means coming back for another visit, might be better for long-term results.

If you’re due for a colonoscopy, talk to your doctor about how and when polyps will be removed. A little extra time may help prevent future problems.
