High Global Prevalence of Steatotic Liver Disease and Associated Subtypes A Meta-analysis.DOI 10.1016j.cgh.2025.02.006

Fatty liver disease is now one of the most common health problems around the world. A new study looked at over 11 million people. It found that nearly 4 in 10 people have this condition. The study shows that this is not just a small issue—it’s affecting a huge number of people.

Fatty liver disease means there is too much fat stored in the liver. This can cause damage over time. There are different types, but the most common is linked to problems like high blood sugar, being overweight, or having diabetes. It’s called metabolic fatty liver disease, and it affects about 1 in 3 people.

Other types are caused by alcohol. These are less common but still important. People who drink heavily or who also have other health issues are more at risk.

The numbers are even higher in people with type 2 diabetes or those who are overweight. Around 7 in 10 people in these groups have fatty liver disease.

This study shows that many people have fatty liver disease and don’t even know it. The good news is that lifestyle changes can help. Losing weight, eating healthy, staying active, and avoiding alcohol are all helpful steps.

Doctors say more action is needed. We need better ways to find and treat fatty liver disease early. Making healthy changes now can help protect your liver in the future.
