Gallbladder removal is a common surgery, mostly done using a method called laparoscopy. It involves small cuts and a camera to remove the gallbladder. A newer option is robotic-assisted surgery, where a surgeon controls robotic arms to do the same job. But is one better than the other?

This study looked at over 1.7 million patients from 25 research papers. The goal was to compare the results of laparoscopic and robotic gallbladder surgeries.

The findings were clear: both types of surgery are safe and work well. There was no real difference in success rates, complications after surgery, or how long patients stayed in the hospital. Patients healed similarly, no matter which method was used.

One key difference was the number of cases that needed to switch to open surgery (a bigger operation with a large cut). Robotic surgery had fewer of these conversions, which is a good sign. But robotic surgery took around 13 minutes longer on average.

So what does this mean for you? If you need your gallbladder removed, both methods are safe. Robotic surgery may be slightly better at avoiding open surgery, but takes a bit more time in the operating room.

Your doctor will help you choose what’s best, based on your health and the hospital’s tools.
