Safety and efficacy of IL-23 inhibitors in patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis a systematic review and meta-analysis DOI 10.1007s00384-025-05014-5

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a long-term illness that causes swelling and sores in the colon. It can lead to pain, bleeding, and diarrhea. Some people with UC need strong treatments when other medicines don’t work.

Doctors are now studying a new type of medicine called IL-23 inhibitors. These drugs help calm the immune system. They may work better for people with moderate to severe UC.

A new study looked at over 4,000 patients to see if IL-23 inhibitors are safe and effective. The results were encouraging.

More patients taking IL-23 inhibitors got relief from their symptoms. Their colon healed better on the inside. This happened both at the start of treatment and when they stayed on the medicine longer. Fewer people had serious side effects when starting treatment, which is a good sign.

These drugs also helped more people stay off steroids, which can cause problems when used too long.

The three IL-23 drugs studied were mirikizumab, risankizumab, and guselkumab. All showed benefits.

If you have moderate to severe UC and your current treatment isn’t working, this new option might help. Ask your doctor if IL-23 inhibitors are right for you.
