Community Privilege and Unplanned Surgery for Access-sensitive Surgical Conditions.DOI 10.1097SLA.0000000000006511

Access to healthcare is not the same for everyone. Factors like income, neighborhood resources, and social opportunities can affect how quickly someone receives medical care.A new study shows that these differences can even influence whether surgery happens in an emergency.Researchers studied over 185,000 patients in California who had surgery for conditions like colon cancer, abdominal aortic aneurysm, or ventral hernia. These are conditions that can often be treated earlier with planned surgery if patients have good access to care.
The study found that people living in less privileged areas were much more likely to need unplanned or emergency surgery. More than half of patients in these areas had emergency operations, compared with about 39% in the most privileged areas.
Patients from lower-privilege communities also faced worse outcomes. They had higher chances of complications, longer hospital stays, and even higher death rates during hospitalization. These findings highlight how social factors—like income, education, and community resources—can directly affect health outcomes. When people have better access to healthcare and early medical care, they are more likely to receive planned treatments instead of emergency surgery.Improving access to healthcare, education, and early screening could help reduce these gaps and improve surgical outcomes for everyone.
