Enhanced recovery after surgery in laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer efficacy, safety, meta-analysis.DOI 10.1186s12938-025-01504-3

Surgery to remove stomach cancer is a major operation, and recovery can take time. Doctors are now using special care programs called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) to help patients recover faster and more safely.
A new study looked at 13 clinical trials involving nearly 2,000 patients who had laparoscopic surgery to remove stomach cancer. Some patients followed ERAS recovery programs, while others received standard postoperative care.
Patients in the ERAS group experienced several important benefits. They left the hospital sooner, had fewer complications, and lost less blood during surgery. They were also able to start walking, pass gas, and begin eating sooner, which are important signs that the body is recovering well.
The study also found that inflammation in the body, measured by a marker called C-reactive protein, was lower in patients following ERAS protocols. Lower inflammation can help speed up healing.
One downside was a slightly higher rate of hospital readmission, meaning a few patients needed to return to the hospital after going home. Even so, no deaths were reported, and overall recovery outcomes were better with ERAS.
These findings suggest that ERAS programs are a safe and effective way to improve recovery after stomach cancer surgery. Many hospitals are now adopting these strategies to help patients heal faster and return to normal life sooner.
