Long-term outcomes of S-1-based chemoradiotherapy in inoperable elderly patients with esophageal carcinoma A multicenter, randomized, phase III clinical trial.DOI 10.1016j.radonc.2025.111334

Esophageal cancer can be hard to treat, especially in older patients who cannot undergo surgery. Many rely on radiation therapy alone. Doctors are always looking for better options to improve survival.

A recent study focused on patients aged 70 years and above with advanced esophageal cancer who could not have surgery.

It compared two approaches:

⦿ Radiation therapy alone

⦿ Radiation combined with an oral chemotherapy drug called S-1

The results are encouraging.

Patients who received both radiation and S-1 lived longer. About 34 out of 100 patients were alive after 5 years with the combined treatment. In comparison, only about 24 out of 100 patients survived with radiation alone.

The combined treatment also helped delay cancer progression. Around 31 out of 100 patients had no disease worsening at 5 years, compared to about 21 out of 100 with radiation alone.

For elderly patients who cannot have surgery, adding S-1 chemotherapy to radiation may offer better outcomes.

Key takeaways:

⦿ Combined treatment can improve survival

⦿ It helps control cancer growth more effectively

⦿ It may become a standard option for older patients

If you or a loved one has esophageal cancer, ask your doctor about all available treatment options. Age alone should not limit access to effective care.

Careful planning and the right treatment approach can improve both survival and quality of life.
