Mobile App for Colon Cancer Screening Did Not Increase Testing Rates

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths, but regular screening can find it early and save lives. Many people still miss their recommended screenings. To help improve screening rates, researchers tested a new mobile app designed to guide patients through barriers to colon cancer testing.

The study included more than 50,000 adults from 18 community health clinics between 2021 and 2023. Clinics were divided into two groups. One group had a “low-touch” approach, where staff received basic training and support. The other group had a “high-touch” approach, which included extra help such as in-person support, staff coaching, and a clinic champion to encourage app use.

At first, about 6% of patients used the app. But within six months, usage dropped to about 1% in both groups. Importantly, there was no difference in how many patients completed colon cancer screening after the app was introduced compared to before. This means that the app, even with more staff support, did not increase screening rates.

The researchers believe that challenges like staff shortages, burnout after the pandemic, and busy clinic schedules made it difficult to keep patients engaged with the app. They suggest that future efforts may need simpler solutions that fit more easily into everyday healthcare routines.

For patients, the key message is clear: while digital tools may help some people, the most important step is to make sure you stay on track with colon cancer screening. Talking directly with your doctor about the best test for you remains the most reliable way to protect your health.
