Common Blood Pressure Drugs May Help People With Liver Disease Live Longer

A group of medicines used for high blood pressure—called RAAS inhibitors—may also help people with liver disease live longer and reduce serious complications, according to a new study.

This research looked at real-world data from over 22,000 people with cirrhosis, a serious liver condition. It found that those who took RAAS inhibitors had fewer liver-related events and better survival rates than those who didn’t take these medicines.

RAAS inhibitors include common drugs like lisinopril and losartan. People who used them were less likely to develop liver complications, and they were also more likely to live longer. The biggest benefit was seen in reducing the risk of liver cancer, known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

These findings are important because cirrhosis patients often have other health issues like high blood pressure. Knowing that these medications might also help protect the liver gives doctors more options.

But these medicines are not for everyone. People with low blood pressure, kidney issues, or advanced liver disease may not be good candidates. That’s why it’s important to talk to your doctor before starting or stopping any medication.

If you have cirrhosis and are already taking a RAAS inhibitor, this study brings some reassuring news. If you’re not on one, ask your doctor if it might be right for you.
