Cause of Liver Cancer May Change Which Treatments Work Best

A new study has found that the cause of liver cancer—whether from a virus or another condition—can affect how well certain treatments work. This matters for people with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer.

Researchers reviewed 29 major studies with more than 18,000 patients. They compared how well different medicines worked based on whether the liver cancer was caused by hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or non-viral conditions like alcohol use or fatty liver.

For people with hepatitis B or C, the best results came from a drug combination called atezolizumab plus bevacizumab. These patients lived longer than those on older treatments. But in people whose liver cancer wasn’t caused by a virus, this same treatment didn’t help as much. Another option called STRIDE worked better for them.

Some treatments worked about the same no matter the cause, but the best outcomes depended on what caused the liver disease in the first place.

This research shows that the right treatment may be different depending on your medical history. If you or a loved one has liver cancer, ask your doctor how the cause of the cancer may affect which treatment works best.
