Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy With Gemcitabine and S-1 Versus Upfront Surgery for Resectable Pancreatic Cancer Results DOI 10.1097SLA.0000000000006730

A new study shows that giving chemotherapy before surgery can help people with pancreatic cancer live longer. The treatment used two drugs: gemcitabine and S-1. This was tested in people whose cancer could be removed with surgery.

Usually, people with pancreatic cancer have surgery first, followed by chemotherapy. But this study tested a new way—giving chemotherapy first, then surgery. The researchers compared the two approaches.

More than 360 people took part. Half had surgery first. The other half had two rounds of chemotherapy before surgery. The group that got chemotherapy before surgery lived about 10 months longer on average. They also had fewer cancer relapses.

This is important because pancreatic cancer is hard to treat. Many people do not survive long after diagnosis. Starting treatment with chemotherapy may give people a better chance.

The study shows that using chemotherapy before surgery is safe and works better than doing surgery first. This new way of treating pancreatic cancer may soon become the standard for people whose cancer can be removed by surgery.
