Risk of pancreatic cancer after eradication treatment of Helicobacter pyloriDOI 10.1016j.ejca.2015.11.6192

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that infects the stomach and is known to cause ulcers.

Some research has also linked it to a higher risk of pancreatic cancer. But does getting rid of the bacteria help lower that risk?

This large study looked at over 660,000 people in five countries who were treated to remove H. pylori between 1995 and 2019.

Researchers followed these people for up to 24 years to see how many developed pancreatic cancer.

They found that the risk was slightly higher during the first 5 years after treatment. But after that, the risk dropped and became the same as the general population.

In other words, the extra risk from the infection seems to go away over time after treatment.

This is good news. It suggests that treating H. pylori not only helps with stomach problems but may also help protect against future cancer risk—especially if caught and treated early. If you’ve had ulcers or tested positive for H. pylori, talk to your doctor.Getting proper treatment could havelong-term benefits for your health.
