Estimating global prevalence of gallbladder stones in general population from 2000 to 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis DOI- 10.108007853890.2025.2570795

Gallstones are hard stones that form in the gallbladder. They can cause pain, nausea, and digestion problems. A new study looked at how many people around the world have gallstones. It found that about 1 in every 20 people has them.

The researchers reviewed 139 studies from different countries. They found big differences between places. Uganda had the highest number of people with gallstones—about 22 out of every 100. Australia had the lowest, with less than 1 in 500.

Some people are more likely to get gallstones. Women, people over 50, and those with a higher body weight have a higher risk. If someone in your family has gallstones, your risk also goes up. Other health problems—like high blood pressure, diabetes, or fatty liver disease—can make gallstones more likely too.

The study also found that things like smoking, alcohol, diet, or cholesterol levels didn’t have much impact on gallstones.

Gallstones are a serious problem and can lead to surgery or long-term discomfort. Knowing your risk can help you and your doctor make better choices. If you have belly pain or trouble digesting food, talk to your doctor. You might need an ultrasound or other tests.
