Comparative efficacy of reinforced suturing, transanal drainage tube, and no additional interventionDOI 10.1007s00384-026-05

One of the biggest risks after rectal cancer surgery is a leak where the bowel is reconnected. This is called an anastomotic leak, and it can lead to serious problems or even another surgery.

This new study compared three ways surgeons try to prevent leaks:

Researchers looked at results from over 4,500 patients across 16 studies. Both reinforced sutures and drainage tubes helped reduce leaks compared to doing nothing extra. Reinforced sutures were the most effective at preventing severe leaks that need urgent surgery or cause serious illness.

While both methods were helpful, reinforced sutures stood out for stopping the worst kinds of leaks. Drainage tubes might slightly lower the chance of scarring or narrowing later, but more research is needed. The bottom line: these added steps during surgery can make a difference. Your surgeon may choose one based on your personal risk and what’s best for your recovery.
