People with prediabetes may face a higher risk of getting colorectal cancer. A new study looked at over 850,000 people and found that those with prediabetes were 16% more likely to develop colorectal cancer than those with normal blood sugar levels.
Prediabetes is common and often goes unnoticed. It usually has no symptoms. Many people don’t know they have it. But this study shows that even without diabetes, higher blood sugar could still cause health problems.
The risk of cancer was especially high in people who had prediabetes for 5 to 10 years or longer. This means that the longer you have high blood sugar, the more it may affect your body.
There’s good news. You can lower your risk. Losing weight, eating healthy, and being active all help bring blood sugar levels down. These changes don’t just help prevent diabetes. They also help protect you from cancer.
If you have prediabetes or are at risk, talk to your doctor. Ask about getting screened for colorectal cancer earlier.
