Breathing polluted air may affect more than just your lungs. A review of several studies found that air pollution, especially small particles called PM₂.₅, may increase the risk of liver diseases, liver cancer, and colorectal cancer.
Nine reviews with over 40 studies were analyzed. While air pollution did not show a strong link to cancers like stomach or pancreatic cancer, its impact on liver health is significant. Researchers say PM₂.₅ may damage the liver and worsen pre-existing conditions.
Protecting yourself from polluted air, especially if you have liver problems, may help lower these risks.
