Recovering from esophageal surgery can be challenging. A new study shows that Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols may help patients recover better compared to standard care.
ERAS protocols are special plans for patient care after surgery. They aim to reduce complications and speed up recovery. This study reviewed six clinical trials involving 850 patients who had esophageal surgery. It found that patients in the ERAS group had fewer overall complications, including lung problems, and spent less time in the hospital.
Patients using ERAS were also able to pass gas sooner, which is an important sign of recovery. However, ERAS didn’t significantly reduce other issues, like heart or gastrointestinal complications, wound healing problems, or death rates.
The results suggest that ERAS protocols improve recovery and reduce hospital stays. Patients undergoing esophageal surgery might benefit from asking their doctors about ERAS as part of their care plan.
