Cancer treatments like chemotherapy are life-saving but can harm the liver. This can make patients feel tired, nauseous, or weak. Liver damage can also affect future treatments. New research suggests natural plant extracts and chemicals from plants could help protect the liver during chemotherapy.
Scientists reviewed 61 studies done on animals. These studies tested plant-based substances alongside chemotherapy drugs like cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin. Results showed that natural compounds reduced liver damage. They lowered liver enzymes, improved liver tissue, and boosted antioxidants. Antioxidants are like bodyguards for cells, protecting them from harm.
Plant extracts also helped reduce inflammation. When the liver is less inflamed, it works better. This could mean fewer side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
While these findings are promising, doctors need more research on humans. Scientists must ensure these natural substances are safe and work well with chemotherapy. Future studies will check if they can be part of regular cancer care.
Patients should not replace their cancer treatments with plant products. Always speak to your doctor before trying anything new. This research gives hope that natural remedies could support the liver and improve quality of life during cancer treatment.
