Robot-assisted surgery is often seen as a high-tech option for cancer care. A large study reviewed 32 trials with over 6,000 patients to see how well it actually works.
Patients who had robot surgery often had shorter hospital stays and lost less blood. They also had fewer problems after surgery. But the surgery itself took a bit longer to perform.
Even with these short-term benefits, the study didn’t find a difference in how long people lived. The cancer didn’t come back more or less often depending on the type of surgery. So while robot surgery may help you feel better faster, it may not change the bigger picture.
If you or a loved one are facing surgery for cancer, it’s worth asking your doctor if robot-assisted surgery is an option—and if it fits your needs.
