People with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) have a higher risk of liver cancer, but research suggests that statins—commonly used to lower cholesterol—may help reduce this risk.
A study analyzing nearly 300,000 patients found that those taking statins were 60% less likely to develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer. The effect was stronger in those taking lipophilic statins, and higher long-term doses provided the greatest protection.
If you have MASLD, statins might not only help your heart but also lower your risk of liver cancer. Talk to your doctor to see if they are right for you.
